Almost 71. No Knee Pain. 13 Pounds Down. This Is Mary.

In semi-private training at Block Fitness, stories like this are the norm, not the exception.

Mary tells her friends and family the same thing every time they see her on Instagram.

“I’m trying to stay alive for you guys. So just be nice and don’t laugh at me when you see my videos.”

She says it with a laugh. But she means every word.

Mary is almost 71. She has been training at Block Fitness Catalina Foothills since April 2024. She has no more knee issues. Her shoulder is perfectly fine. Her energy is, in her words, off the charts. She lost 13 pounds in the last year. Her progress reflects what’s possible with structured semi-private training.

And this morning, before filming this, she was already telling her neighbor — fresh out of physical therapy — that she needed to come check out Block.

“She’s going to. She’s so excited.”

That is who Mary is.

Watch her story.

She Was Done With Personal Training

Before Block Fitness, Mary had tried personal training.

She quit.

“It was boring, it was expensive, and it was just awful.”

She wasn’t looking for another gym. She wasn’t looking for another trainer. She had already decided that version of fitness wasn’t for her.

Then she met Joseph.

“Your personality right away — I’m like, ‘I don’t care what they do to me, I’m signing up.’ And I’ve never looked back. I love it.”

That first impression mattered. Not because of a sales pitch. Because of a genuine connection with someone who cared about what they were doing and who they were doing it with. Mary recognized it immediately and she trusted it.

Two-plus years later, she is still here.

What Changed

The physical results are real and worth naming.

Her knee — the one that had been bad enough to require physical therapy — no longer gives her problems.

“This did more for me than physical therapy. And I don’t have any issues with my knee anymore. My shoulder’s perfectly fine. I’m not going back to PT. I’m gonna come here.”

She lost 13 pounds over the last year. Not through a dramatic intervention. Through showing up consistently, training with intention, and having a coach who kept her moving.

That coach is Coach Val — and Mary has thoughts about her.

“Valerie — talk about energy. She keeps us old ladies up. Being around her, you feel like moving.”

That is the environment Block Fitness is built around. Not a transaction. A relationship. A place where the energy in the room makes you want to do more than you thought you could that day.

What She’s Training For

Mary travels for her grandkids. A lot of walking. Squeezing into seats. Long flights. The physical demands of being an engaged, present grandmother don’t stop because you’re 70.

“I just wanna stay in shape to see those grandkids get married and have their kids.”

That is a goal. A real one. Not a number on a scale or a finish line at a race. A life she wants to be capable of living — fully, for as long as possible.

That is exactly who Block Fitness is built for.

Adults who understand what’s at stake. Who don’t need to be sold on the importance of staying strong and mobile and capable. Who just need the right environment, the right coaching, and a community that makes showing up something they actually look forward to.

Mary has all three.

Almost 71. Still Trying to Stay Upright.

She said it herself, laughing, at the end of the video.

“Here I am, almost 71, still trying to stay upright.”

There is more wisdom in that line than most fitness content produces in a year. She is not chasing a transformation. She is not trying to turn back the clock. She is investing — consistently, intelligently, with good coaching and good people around her — in the life she wants to keep living.

That is the whole game. At any age.

It’s never too late to start. Mary will tell you that herself. She already told her neighbor this morning.

Quick Take: FAQ

Q: Is Block Fitness appropriate for someone in their 60s or 70s with joint issues?
A: This is exactly who we serve every day. Our coaches are trained to work with joint pain, post-rehab clients, and adults who need intelligent, individualized programming. Mary’s knee and shoulder results are not unusual — they are what happens when training is done correctly for where someone actually is. Semi-private training lets us tailor the intensity and movement to each person’s body.

Q: How is semi-private training different from personal training?
A: You get an individualized program — not a group workout — but you train alongside other members rather than one-on-one. As Mary put it: “There really isn’t any difference between one-on-one except you’re not just with one person. You’ve got a lot of people around you, so you’re not bored.” The coaching quality is there. So is the community.

Q: What if I’ve had a bad experience with personal training before?
A: Mary had one. She said it was boring, expensive, and awful. Come in for an assessment and experience the difference for yourself before deciding anything.
